staying power

So often, I come across songs that I love at first. Sometimes, I'll listen to them repeatedly for days on end, sometimes weeks on end. Rarely, though, do they last. Most music has a shelf life for me. Eventually, I've pondered all the lyrics and appreciated all the nuances of the melody. This song, though, refuses to go away. It's been going strong for years now.

What songs have "staying power" for you?

  1. Johnny Cash - Hurt. His voice is so fragile, so raw and worn. If he were singing a different sort of song, his voice could be said to be bad, but here its "badness" matches the song perfectly

  2. I like Johhny Cash, and that song. It is in its own category of Cash songs, though. For a reason.

The angst in this song and Hurt is actually comparable, if I dare make the comparison. Angst might also not be the right word...

  3. Hmm, I can't think of any whole song that I've enjoyed consistently over a long period of time. So much depends on the mood I'm in before I hear it, and on the memories associated with it. But I find myself admiring Apocalyptica's instrumental cover of Nothing Else Matters quite often.
